    Dear Friend,

We're really excited about the news we have to share this January! Read on to learn about a featured site project completed at TenPoint Crossbow Technology in 2014.

While it's been a strong start to this year, we are working with our partners on 33 projects throughout the county. The year ahead promises to bring projects and progress to Portage County. Find all the new commercial developments happening in Portage County here.

    Featured Success at PDB

The PDB’s first task was to set up a Community Reinvestment Area in Suffield Township to assist TenPoint with a property tax abatement for its proposed expansion. During this time PDB introduced the company to OhioMeansJobs Portage County which followed up with workforce assistance. As the project was developing, two potentially deal killing issues came to light. The first issue was a concern that the process for ruling on wetlands from the Ohio EPA would be slowed down and the company could not build in time to meet its schedule for sales. The second issue involved a ruling that TenPoint owed back state unemployment compensation taxes as a result of buying the fixed assets of a competitor that had closed down. PDB asked the Governor’s office to look into these issues who in turn, was able to resolve these issues to the satisfaction of TenPoint.

With the concerns resolved TenPoint went forward to apply for the CRA property tax abatement, which was awarded on May 1, 2014. The project has since been completed.

    Husted Announces November TechCred Results

Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted, who serves as Director of the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation, today announced the results of November’s round of TechCred, in which 349 employers were approved for funding, providing the opportunity for Ohioans to earn 4,466 tech-focused credentials. This most recent round marks the 17th application period of the program with manufacturing topping the list of industries applying for tech-infused credentials.

"TechCred continues to grow and become a powerful tool for Ohio businesses and our workforce,’ said Lt. Governor Jon Husted. “The numbers speak volumes about how TechCred is succeeding in growing our workforce and upskilling Ohioans in today’s tech-infused economy.”

With the approvals announced today, a total of 2,173 Ohio employers have been approved for funding through the TechCred program, supporting the earning of 57,233 tech-focused credentials by employees.

This program helps businesses address their workforce needs by upskilling current and prospective employees. Businesses of all sizes, from any industry, are eligible for up to $30,000 per round and up to $180,000 per year.
